Sewing course (5 weeks)

Fridays -1pm - 3pm 


This five-week course is perfect for complete beginners or anyone looking to refresh and build on their skills in encouraging environment.  The course is designed to meet you where you are 


 Beginners will continue building core skills through structured mini-projects, while returning and more confident sewists will work on a guided garment project — a simple skirt made to their own measurements.


 With a maximum of six learners, you’ll receive plenty of individual attention, clear demonstrations, and help tailored to your level and goals. 


This course will help you grow confidence, creativity, and a love for sewing.  

Who is it for?

  • Absolute beginners — no experience needed.
  • Home sewers who’ve dabbled before and want to build a solid foundation. 
  • Experienced home sewists who want to build on their knowledge 
  •  Anyone who enjoys learning in a calm, friendly, small-group environment. 

What you'll learn...

Across the five weeks, you’ll:


  • Build confidence using a sewing machine, including stitch accuracy and control.
  • Learn accurate measuring, marking, and fabric cutting techniques.
  • Understand grainlines, seam allowances, and fabric layout.
  • Follow construction steps in the correct order for professional results.
  • Develop problem-solving skills and confidence to work more independently.
     

For returning and confident sewists, you’ll also:

  • Take and record body measurements accurately. 
  • Choose the correct pattern size and make basic fit adjustments.
  • Alter skirt length and waist to suit your proportions.
  • Gain confidence to insert zips 
  • Construct and finish a simple skirt to a high standard

Mini projects you will create..

Projects will be tailored to individual experience and may include:


  • A drawstring bag to explore seams, casings, and finishing.
  • A cushion cover to learn measuring, marking, and buttonholes.
  • A zip purse to master zip insertion and lining.
  • A personal final project of your choice — from a tote bag to simple pyjama shorts.
     

For returning and confident sewists:

  • Take and record body measurements accurately.
  • Choose the correct pattern size and make basic fit adjustments.
  • Alter skirt length and waist to suit your proportions.
  • Insert a waistband and zip or elastic (depending on pattern choice).
  • Construct and finish a simple skirt to a high standard
     

(Projects may vary slightly depending on class progress and individual goals — flexibility is encouraged to suit each learner.)

What to Bring


  • A basic sewing kit: fabric scissors, pins, unpicker, tape measure, and chalk or fabric marker.
  • Fabric and trims for your chosen project (guidance will be provided before and during the course).
     

Some practice materials will be provided.

  • A collection of handmade pieces showcasing your skills.
  • Increased confidence and accuracy at the sewing machine.
  • A clearer understanding of measuring, cutting, and construction.
  • A strong, reinforced foundation in core sewing skills.
