Beginner Sewing course (6 weeks)

Course Overview

Fridays -1pm - 3pm

This six-week course is perfect for complete beginners or anyone looking to refresh the basics in a calm, encouraging environment. You’ll learn how to use a sewing machine, understand fabrics and patterns, and build the essential skills to start making your own simple garments and accessories.

Classes are kept intentionally small — with a maximum of six learners — to ensure plenty of one-to-one support and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. This small-group setting means you’ll have time to ask questions, receive personalized guidance, and progress at your own pace.

Each two-hour session combines step-by-step demonstrations with hands-on practice, helping you grow confidence, creativity, and a love for sewing.  By the end of the course, you’ll have created several beautiful, useful pieces — and developed the skills to begin sewing independently.

Who is it for?

  • Absolute beginners — no experience needed.
  • Home sewers who’ve dabbled before and want to build a solid foundation.
  • Anyone looking for a mindful, creative hobby in a friendly, supportive setting

What you'll learn...

 Across the six weeks, you’ll:

  • Gain confidence using a sewing machine, including threading, tension, and stitch control.
  • Explore key techniques: seams, pressing, hemming, and edge finishes.
  • Try an overlocker and learn how to neaten and finish garments professionally.
  • Understand grainlines, seam allowances, and fabric preparation.
  • Learn to measure, mark, and draft simple patterns directly onto fabric.
  • Practise buttonholes and zip insertions using a variety of methods.
  • Build awareness of basic garment construction, fitting, and finishing

Mini projects you will create..

Throughout the course, you’ll complete a series of small makes that build your skills and confidence:

  • A fabric coaster or sampler to practise machine control.
  • A drawstring bag to explore seams, casings, and finishing.
  • A cushion cover to learn measuring, marking, and buttonholes.
  • A zip purse to master zip insertion and lining.
  • A personal final project of your choice — from a tote bag to simple pyjama shorts — to put your new skills into practice.

(Projects may vary slightly depending on class progress and individual goals — flexibility is encouraged to suit each learner.)

What to Bring

  • A basic sewing kit: fabric scissors, pins, unpicker, tape measure, and chalk or fabric marker.
  • Fabric and trims for mini projects (guidance will be provided each week).

Practice materials for early sessions are included.

What you will leave with

  • A collection of handmade pieces showcasing your new skills.
  • Confidence using a sewing machine and reading simple patterns.
  • A strong foundation in sewing techniques to build on in future courses.
  • The calm satisfaction that comes from creating something beautiful by hand.
